The Mobile Lifestyle
Old and busted: The Motorola V551 cellular phone. And I mean that literally: the speaker in the earpiece makes an occasional crackly noise, but it's impossible to have a conversation through it. It could be used as a speakerphone, or with a bluetooth headset, but this still left the problem that I would either have only a public conversation or I'd be at the mercy on the charge of a second device. And I suspect the first device—the phone itself—was having charging issues as well, as it could spontaneously not work for me when I needed it.
It was time for a change. And what a change it's been.
The #1 thing holding me back from the changeover was the question, "Would it sync properly with my computer?" Only one manufacturer would give me an enthusiastic thumbs-up to that question, and that was the maker of the laptop it was destined to sync to: Apple.
The thing that held me back from pulling that trigger (and to a lesser degree every other trigger available) was the expense. Having to sign on for a new voice plan and a new data plan, especially now, seemed ludicrous.
But then I found out that I could keep my old plan, and the new data plans (using AT&T's new more limited options) were only a few more dollars than what I had already and much better t'boot.
"How much better," you ask?
New plan: 200 megabytes.
Old plan: 1 megabyte.
Yes, for $8 more, I increased my data throughput by two orders of magnitude. And oh yes, I'm watching my data usage every day and practicing on the home network whereever possible. Overages would still suck big-time.
